The Day I Told My Mother I Wanted Her to Die

Spirituality

November 28, 2024

Picture it.

2018, Miami, Florida

I’m on vacation with my mother in one of the most beautiful places in the world, and we’re about to have the biggest fight we’ve ever had…

Our voices started to get louder, and mascara starts to run down my face with the tears that I can’t hold back anymore.

I scream out and tell my mother that I want her to die… more healed than wounded.

She looked at me puzzled and asked why I would want that for her.

I said, “Why on earth would I want anything but healing, peace, and love for the woman that gave me life?”

Our relationship shifted since that day.

I understood the power of conflict and its healing abilities.

If there is conflict between two people, it’s a good indication that both, if not one person, is very much invested in the relationship and desires connection.

A huge red flag in relationships is the absence of conflict, which indicates that all parties are checked out and no longer invested in making the relationship work.

My ability to understand this early on helped me heal parts of myself with the purpose of becoming whole in a chaotic family system.

Understanding that there is healing in relationships when the core wounds were established in relationship.

Our relationship with our mothers is the primary foundational relationship that sets the tone for how we relate with others since birth.

Trying to heal a relationship with a difficult mother is one of the hardest, emotional, and laboring experiences an adult can have.

For that reason, I created Latinx with Difficult Mothers, a one-hour pre-recorded workshop to guide adult children to navigate healing in their relationship with their mother.
